NHS worker entitlements

Over a million NHS staff are on Agenda for Change terms — a national contract (the NHS Terms and Conditions of Service Handbook) that is more generous than the statutory floor on almost every entitlement. These calculators do the handbook maths with your own numbers.

Statutory vs Agenda for Change: the headline gaps

Why the NHS scheme usually beats the statutory minimum
EntitlementStatutory floorAgenda for Change
Annual leave28 days incl. bank holidays35–41 days incl. 8 public holidays
Sick paySSP £123.25/wk, 28 wks1–6 months full pay + same again at half, by service
Maternity39 wks SMP8 wks full + 18 wks half + SMP, with 13 more wks SMP
RedundancyMax 30 wks × £751A month per year, up to 24 months' pay

The occupational schemes carry conditions the statutory ones don't — 12 months' service for maternity, returning to work for 3 months, and so on. Each calculator spells out the conditions that apply to its own numbers.

Common questions

Do these figures apply in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?
Mostly — Agenda for Change is UK-wide, but each nation applies its own amendments: NHS Wales adds a leave day on appointment, Scotland has its own redundancy section and pay scales. The calculators flag the differences inline.
I'm a doctor/dentist — do these calculators apply to me?
Medical and dental staff are on separate national contracts, though the maternity scheme mirrors Section 15 closely. Bank and agency staff aren't on AfC terms at all — statutory rules apply instead.
Where do I find my exact pay for these calculations?
Your payslip or the current AfC pay circular. Our calculators ask for your actual salary rather than a band lookup, so pay awards never make the results stale.
